The LAB
Created in 1969 by the Renault and PSA Groups, the LAB is an accident research and biomechanics laboratory that also studies human behaviour. 20 experts from both manufacturers help to make road safety progress every day.
Renault has been improving the safety of its vehicles for 50 years
In 50 years, the LAB has helped to reduce the mortality rate on the road to one fifth of previous levels. It is a prime example of the benefits of manufacturers working together for everybody’s safety.
1954: creation of the 1st LAB
creation of a physiological and biomechanics lab in an engineering department.
1957: first experiment on alertness
study of driver behaviour, analysis of driving strategies and needs.
1969: creation of the L.A.B.
creation of the L.A.B. (Laboratory of Accident Analysis, Biomechanics and Human Behaviour).
1974: BRV study vehicle
Basic Research Vehicle (BRV) on passive safety.
1978: epure safety research vehicle
study prototype designed to protect occupants from frontal and side impacts at up to 65 kph.
1995: PRS
Pre-Prepared Restraints System (PRS) on Megane I with seat belt force limitation.
2001: ESP
ESP on Laguna II and 3rd generation PRS (Adaptive Airbag). In total, over 2,000 patents have been filed for cutting-edge technological solutions (Fireman Access, SD Switch, etc.).

a safer future
The mission: to continue to further reduce the number of victims on the roads. By supporting the development of new technologies, the LAB helps manufacturers to design systems that perform even better.
